What To Look For In An Email List Manager

Once you begin to build up your mailing list you will soon find that it is no longer manageable by regular email software.  In order to get the most from your mailing list you will need to look into using an email list manager. Most have many features that are very useful for anyone involved in marketing, as it will not only manage your contacts but it can schedule the regular dispersal of newsletters and promotional material and offers.

There are many different software packages available that can do this. Some are web based while others are PC based. A web-based manager is usually preferable as all of the work is done online; usually a monthly or yearly fee is paid for this service, while some are free and come as part of a Web server package. PC based programs are sold for a specific price after which they are downloaded and used from a computer.

The intricacies of each type of program are varied, with some being much more versatile and comprehensive than others. Most programs will include features such as ways to create mailing campaigns, keep track of contacts, manage subscribers and subscription requests, HTML editing and basic reporting and tracking features.  However, aside from these basics there are some other options that you should look for when shopping for a suitable program.

Email Personalization:  A good program will be able to insert the name of the email recipient directly into the material that is being sent out.

Bounce-back Management: Once your list grows to several hundred or thousand recipients you have no way of keeping track manually of who is receiving your messages and who is not. People close their email addresses or if their inbox becomes full. A good program should be able to automatically unsubscribe any email addresses that bounce back.

HTML Formatting: If you are planning on sending out newsletters, anything with graphics or formatting you want to make sure that the program you use is able to use HTML formatting codes.

There are many different options when it comes to choosing an email list manager. Your decision will need to take into account how much you are able to spend on a monthly or one time basis, the quantity of emails you will be sending out and how many special tracking features are needed.
